FBI, DOJ to brief lawmakers on handling of Russian Federation probe on Thursday

The Latest: Trump: 'SPYGATE' may be among biggest scandals

His tweets prompted the Justice Department to ask its inspector general to expand an ongoing probe into the surveillance of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page to include a review of whether the FBI was politically motivated in its investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 u.s. election.

The FBI and Department of Justice will brief lawmakers Thursday on classified material they have requested relating to the FBI's actions during the 2016 campaign, the White House announced Tuesday. It was Trump's latest in a series of escalating attacks on the Russian Federation probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

At least 18 Republican lawmakers signed onto a resolution calling on U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special counsel to investigate the department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accusing them of misconduct as Trump campaigned two years ago against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Press: Why Trump should thank FBI Trump administration sued for not releasing FBI morale survey results MORE and whether that constituted obstruction of justice.

House GOP leadership had not committed to bringing up their measure for a vote on the House floor, the Republicans said.

"It's a drastic step, but quite frankly these are drastic facts that continue to bubble to the surface and its time that we get a response", Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said.

She said no White House staff would be in attendance.

The US Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation will provide a highly anticipated briefing on the handling of the Russian Federation investigation to Republican members of Congress on Thursday, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Tuesday.

Attorney Rudy Giuliani told the New York Times that Mueller intends to wrap up the obstruction investigation by September 1, however, if the special counsel can't interview Trump on obstruction, that may no longer be the case.

The statement had come shortly after Donald Trump finished a meeting with the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, Wray and Coats.

Trump nevertheless has not fired Sessions, or Rosentein, or Mueller.

House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes and House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, both Republicans, are expected to attend, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a regular news briefing.

On Monday, Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo told Fox News there might be at least two informants and said that he was also approached.

The move stoked some consternation in Congress. Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said previously that he expected to be invited and said Democrats being shut out was "another serious abuse of power".

Giuliani also told the Times Mueller's team should finish up their probe of Trump's actions by September 1 so it wouldn't harm the Republican Party at the ballot box in the November election.

The former contractor, from a US government agency Caputo refrained from naming, had contacted a friend of Caputo's on May 6, 2016, and told him the agency had emails and wanted to get them to the Trump campaign.

"Sadly they have allies in Congress who are all too happy to help in destroying these institutions", Schiff said.
