Former Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers defender Jlloyd Samuel killed in auto crash

Reports are that Samuel was returning home after dropping his kids off to school and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

The 37-year-old made close to 200 appearances for Villa and also represented Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City.

Former Trinidadian soccer player Jlloyd Samuel died on Tuesday, aged 37, in a traffic accident in England, the soccer federation of Trinidad and Tobago confirmed in a statement.

Former Aston Villa and Bolton defender Jlloyd Samuel died in a vehicle crash on Tuesday at the age of 37, Cheshire Police confirmed.

Tributes are now pouring in for Samuel.

The former England Under-21 global - who switched allegiances to Trinidad and Tobago in 2009 - came through the ranks at Charlton Athletic before playing for Villa, Bolton, Gillingham and Cardiff City.

"Our players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect tonight and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this very hard time".

He played youth football for Charlton before joining Aston Villa, where he made almost 200 appearances between 1999 and 2007.

He moved to fellow Premier League side Bolton in 2007, where he spent four years, before ending his playing days in Iran.

A former defender with English clubs Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers, Samuel's auto collided with another vehicle and caught fire.

Samuel recently celebrated his 37th birthday in March this year.

Born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, Samuel attended St Joseph's Academy, Blackheath through the 1990s where he was a valuable member of the school football teams as well as the London Schoolboys teams.

Cheshire Police said they were called to a serious collision involving a van and a Range Rover in High Legh, Cheshire at 07:55.

Their statement added: "Sadly the driver of the auto, Jlloyd Samuel, 37, from Lymm, died at the scene".

It is understood that the man who was driving the van sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to hospital for treatment.
