Gaza crisis: Nigeria condemns killing of 58 Palestinian protesters

Pakistan's permanent UN Ambassador Dr Maleeha Lodhi

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had tallied similar numbers to Hamas', and "won't let those who call for our destruction to breach our borders and to threaten our communities".

In addition to protesting the relocation of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Palestinians were also marking the 70th anniversary of what they call the Nakba, or "catastrophe", of Israel's creation in 1948.

A Palestinian protester holds a rope during clashes after protests near the border with Israel in the east of Gaza Strip, 14 May 2018.

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, he added, was a separate, internal issue. Those relations are based on the commitment to worldwide law, United Nations resolutions and human rights.

The worldwide community does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the entire city and says its final status should be set in peace negotiations.

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have been on the rise since December, when US President Donald Trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, triggering furious protests violently suppressed by the IDF.

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move that is not recognized internationally, as its "eternal and indivisible capital".

But while Australia has proven itself a staunch friend of the Jewish State, Turnbull told reporters in Melbourne on Tuesday, "We have taken the view - as indeed, most countries have - that it's more conducive to the peace process to keep the Embassy in Tel Aviv".

In Jerusalem, following the U.S. lead, Guatemala opened its embassy in the city on Wednesday.

A Foreign Office spokesperson, in a statement, said the move represents violation of global law and several United Nations Security Council resolutions, in particular resolutions No. 476 and 478.

The US and Guatemalan moves break with decades of global consensus.

During the speeches, which took place as Palestinians armed with rocks and slingshots were facing off against Israeli military snipers, Kushner blamed Hamas for the death of Palestinians, claiming that the organization, which controls the Gaza strip, was to blame for sending demonstrators to their death.

The Israeli military has come under heavy global criticism for firing on unarmed protesters, and faces accusations of using disproportionate force. Some burned tires, hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails, floated incendiary kites, and attempted to destroy border fencing.

"Hamas is the one that sends us Facebook and text messages telling us to go and in the mosques they call and send fliers that tell us to go to the fence", the Hamas member said.

"In the last rounds of confrontations, if 62 people were martyred, 50 of them were Hamas", Dr. Salah Albardawil said in an interview with an Arabic news outlet, according to the Times of Israel. Palestinian officials say the vast majority of the casualties have been unarmed protesters.

"The only alternative would have been, in that case, to mow them down one and all", he said.

"The Hamas leadership is a group of cannibals who treat their children as armament", he said during a visit to a military base in southern Israel.

Gaza medics said two Palestinians were shot dead during Tuesday's demonstrations along the 51 km (32 mile) border.

Israel has accused Hamas, with which it has fought three wars since 2008, of seeking to use the border protests as cover to carry out violence. Haley laid blame for Monday's violence on the Hamas extremists who rule Gaza and insisted it had nothing to do with the opening the embassy, a move that infuriated Palestinians. It also triggered a diplomatic backlash against Israel.

Since the Gaza rallies began on March 30, more than 100 Palestinian demonstrators have been martyred by Israeli army gunfire, including 62 martyred on Monday and Tuesday alone.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union have also called for an independent investigation.

Jerusalem is, as it has always been and always will be, Israel's united capital.

"We are facing a state of blatant aggression against worldwide law and legitimacy which was embodied by the USA embassy's transfer in the occupying state to Jerusalem", said Abul Gheit. Romania, the Czech Republic and Honduras have said they are considering doing the same.

"This is a peaceful resistance bolstered by a military force and by security agencies, and enjoying tremendous popular support", he said.
