Exposés in both the Times and the New Yorker revealed allegations from women who said they had been propositioned, harassed, assaulted or raped by Weinstein, who allegedly used his powerful role in Hollywood to prey on women within the industry. Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman stated in a news conference that they, "intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges".

Sources said Weinstein would be charged with first and third-degree rape related to one case and criminal sex act related to another. Among them is Rose McGowan, who says Weinstein raped her at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997.

"As the hearing neared an end, Mr. Brafman ... handed Mr. Weinstein's passport to [lead prosecutor Joan Illuzzi] and paid his bail with a $1 million cashier's check", The Times reports. His bail is expected to be set at $2 million.

Harvey Weinstein posted a one million dollar cash bail (£751,060) and agreed to wear an electronic tracking device at the Criminal Court in NY today.

Weinstein stepped from a black SUV and walked slowly into a Manhattan police station before a crowd of news cameras.

"The man who pinned me down had handcuffs on him today", McGown said in a new clip from Kelly's Today hour. "The arrest and ensuing charges are the result of a joint investigation between the NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office".

Weinstein faces rape and criminal sex act charges. The New York Police Department, which made the arrest, told Yahoo Entertainment: "The NYPD does not release the mugshot of anyone arrested in New York City".

An attorney for Weinstein, who has always denied allegations of "any allegations of non-consensual sex", said on Friday that Weinstein would plead not guilty to all charges filed by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. His accusers welcomed the news as a sign that the tables were finally turning - not only on him but on other accused predators.

Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual assault, sexual harassment and rape by more than 80 women including A-list actresses such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and Angelina Jolie, is being formally charged for a case involving a woman named Lucia Evans. But that began to change past year when she spoke with investigative journalists about Weinstein.

She said she felt "relief" that he had been arrested, adding, "He should be in jail".

The Manhattan district attorney's office and NY police have investigated Weinstein for months, coming under growing pressure from the Time's Up movement to bring the disgraced producer to justice.
