Hillary Clinton: US democracy in 'full-fledged crisis' under Trump

The U.S. intelligence community concluded in a January 2017 report that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump and hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Nielsen was on Capitol Hill Tuesday with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, to brief members of Congress on election security.

"Do you have any reason to doubt the January 17th [2017] Intelligence Committee assessment that said it was [Russian President] Vladimir Putin who tried to meddle in this election to help President Trump?". "I'm not aware of that".

"I want to be very clear what we have seen the Russians do is attempt to manipulate public confidence on both sides". We've seen them simultaneously encourage to people to go the same protest on the other side.

The report was the first piece of public intelligence issued by the USA government on Russian meddling.

But while Trump continues to goad his Department of Justice into investigating her campaign, she made jokes about the investigation into Russian election meddling that has already ensnared former staffers of his. Susan Brooks of IN said on her way out of the meeting Tuesday.

In the 2017 assessment, the FBI, CIA and NSA all agreed that Russian Federation interfered with a preference for Trump.

On May 16, the Senate Intelligence Committee issued a statement after the review of the USA intelligence community's findings and said they found no evidence to dispute it. Or perhaps they are wary of saying something that might anger a president who doesn't even like to talk about Russian interference in private - much less publicly lend credence to that idea that he wouldn't have won without Russia's help.

"I do generally have no reason to doubt any intelligence assessment", she said.

In the months before the election, the Federal Bureau of Investigation also was investigating the Clinton Foundation for its fundraising practices and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's and some of her associates' use of a private email server while she was Obama's Secretary of State.

Nielsen's admission shocked intelligence experts and some in Congress.

"Importantly, they targeted both major political parties".

"The intelligence assessment language is nuanced for a reason".

DHS is assisting 48 states with election security and handed out a chart at the briefing to members seen by Reuters that said states need to have auditable systems; spend time on planning, training and drills; and should "consider investing in full system architecture reviews". "Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the USA democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency".

Nielsen's comments come just days after the Senate Intelligence Committee announced it sided with the intelligence community in its findings on Russian interference.
