India shuts Tamil Nadu smelting plant after deadly protests

Anti-Sterlite protest Vedanta urges Tamil Nadu government to ensure safety of its employees in Tuticorin

On Tuesday, police firing killed 11 people, majority from nearby villages who were demanding the closure of the Sterlite copper smelter plant they said was destroying the farm lands and leading to severe health issues in the area.

The DMK and other opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh tomorrow, condemning the police action against protesters in Tuticorin.

The state pollution control board disconnected electricity supply to the unit on Thursday morning. The locals have been demanding the closure of the smelter operated by UK-based Vedanta Resources' subsidiary Sterlite Copper.

Over 100 days after the latest round of protests began against a copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi, things turned bloody in the southern Indian town on May 22. Apart from the 13 dead, around 104 people have been injured in the police firing and the consequent violence.

The company maintains that it adheres to environmental standards and accused vested interests of spreading "false propaganda" about its operations. The plant has been ordered to shutdown with immediate effect for the period of 2018-2023.

Ramnath said the smelter suffered from a "perception" that it was the most polluting industry in Thoothukudi because of its size, and that support of the local community would be important to restart the plant and double its capacity, as suggested by Vedanta's billionaire chairman Anil Agarwal.

"The police had to take action under unavoidable circumstances to protect public life and property as the protesters resorted to repeated violence. police had to control the violence", Chief Minister Palaniswami, who holds the Home portfolio, said.

Internet services have been blocked across the city for five days. These jobs will remain suspended as long as the plant shut.
