Jacksonville leading state in growth, according to Census Bureau

Of Long Island's 13 towns, here are the top three and the bottom three in terms of estimated population changes from 2016 to 2017, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

This surge in population in the Sunbelt probably has been going on - "in spurts" - since the 1950s, said William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program in Washington, D.C. While jobs have been added in the area, the economy is not growing as quickly, she said. "If you look at every single metro area in IL except for Chicago, income growth lags the rest of the nation by a significant amount". "That is a pretty big role in the population change".

Austin had the 12th largest population increase, adding 12,515 people between 2016 and 2017.

Connecticut's population change previous year was the ninth-worst in the country.

The census figures are based on estimates that are later adjusted as more data are analyzed.

The Census Bureau reported in March that Maricopa County was the country's fastest-growing county from 2016 to 2017, by number and percentage, with 73,650 additions (1.7 percent).

And it's not just Chicago that's shedding population. Fort Worth's growth means the city is now the country's 15th biggest, the Census says. And Illinois dropped from fifth-largest to sixth-largest state in 2017.

"The population growth has been consistent for the past few years for Maricopa County, and that's largely because of gains from net domestic migration as well as natural increase, meaning more births than deaths, and net global migration", she said.

Tineh, with the local planning council, said people often have moved from the city to the suburbs in the Chicago area, but that doesn't appear to be the case now. The estimate of the county's population has been dropping since 2013.

On average, San Antonio grew by 66 people a day between 2016 and 2017, pushing the city over the 1.5 million population mark for the first time. Frisco, Texas grew the fastest a year ago at 8.2 percent, according to the census data.

While almost all municipalities in Cook County lost some population in 2017, the Chicago area experienced growth in outlying counties.

The Island's small population increases come against a backdrop of census estimates that continue to show the nation's greatest such growth was occurring primarily in the South and West, a decades-old development, experts noted.
