Justice Department Holds Second, Bipartisan Briefing On Classified Russia Probe Information

Donald Trump Alleges Spy Placed in 2016 Presidential Campaign

Those individuals left before the substance of it.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence committee, said the meeting on the classified information had not changed his view that the FBI followed proper procedures during their investigation. Justice officials, though, knew they could not rightfully limit the materials to only Republicans, and at the very least, Schiff would have to be briefed shortly after Nunes, a person familiar with the discussions said. On Wednesday he tweeted that this "could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!" And Trump took up the cause as the White House tries to combat the threat posed by Mueller's investigation.

Giuliani also said that learning about the confidential source is a prerequisite for any special counsel interview with the President. However, Democrats have not been invited to Thursday's briefing.

Yesterday on my Boston Herald Radio show, I asked Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz why he joined a dozen other lawmakers in filing a resolution Tuesday for a second special counsel.

A White House official had told NPR earlier in the day the administration didn't understand why it might be a problem for Kelly to be present at the meetings, at which top law enforcement and intelligence officials were to present secret information about the Department of Justice Russia probe.

ABC News first reported the plans to hold a separate briefing for Democrats, citing multiple administration and congressional sources.

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes and Oversight Chairman Trey Gowdy will meet Thursday with FBI Director Christopher Wray and a senior Justice Department official to review records related to Mueller's investigation.

There's Kaepernick, Eric something or other, I think a guy on the Chiefs, maybe some Eagles, that one guy and definitely no Patriots.

Nunes and Gowdy both declined comment after their briefing.

Inherent in the Intelligence Committee's "work is the responsibility to ask tough questions of the executive branch", he said in a statement. For instance, when they talk about Trump violating the rule of law or obstructing justice, don't they realize that some of us are thinking: Yes, but where were you when the Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't apply the rule of law to Hillary Clinton, and why didn't you object when Hillary obstructed justice by deleting emails under subpoena?

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein leaves a meeting at the White House in Washington, May 21, 2018.

In a statement, Schiff accused Trump's legal team of seeking to use classified information from the Justice Department to gain a legal advantage in the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. The request for the latest documents are the latest in a series of subpoenas to the Justice Department for sensitive information.

According to a US official familiar with the meeting, the briefers did not reveal the name of an informant. He was there in place of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, who received a last-minute invitation.

"However, if you have determined in your best judgment that Justice Department participation in the meeting is the only way to prevent this situation from devolving into an outright constitutional crisis, then we believe you must insist on" the bipartisan briefing, they wrote, calling it "the only appropriate mechanism for highly sensitive briefings that might implicate intelligence sources and methods".
