Kumaraswamy takes oath with galaxy of top leaders in attendance

Coalition will work better than one-party govt: Kumaraswamy

A galaxy of national and regional leaders and Chief Ministers of some non-BJP states from across the country were present on the occasion.

In the same ceremony, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President G. Parameshwara took oath as the state's Deputy Chief Minister.

Those who attended the swearing-in were UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BSP's Mayawati, SP's Akhilesh Yadav, expelled JD (U)'s Sharad Yadav, CPI (M)'s Sitaram Yechury, NCP's Sharad Pawar and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav.

Kumaraswamy was administered the oath by Governor Vajubhai Vala in a gala ceremony held outside the Vidhan Soudha, the state assembly. "This government will be protected by local Congress leaders and our leaders", he added.

The CMs who were at the event included: Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), N Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh), Pinarayi Vijayan (Kerala) and Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi). The apex court allowed Yeddyurappa's swearing-in the next day ordered a floor test 48 hours later.

The BJP, with its 104 MLAs would be a formidable Opposition and would do everything to keep the government on its toes.

Seen as an "accidental politician", Kumaraswamy's first love was films. Kumaraswamy, who grew up in a political environment, entered electoral politics by contesting the Kanakapura Lok Sabha seat in 1996 and won.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday congratulated H D Kumaraswamy on taking oath as Karnataka chief minister and extended his best wishes for his tenure ahead.

BS Yeddyurappa formed government a week ago, but had to quit three days later without facing a trust vote as BJP - though the single-largest party - remained short of majority.

Kumaraswamy's outreach to rural folk with "gram vastavya" project under which he stayed in villages to understand their problems earned him popularity, but he also faced corruption taint in an alleged mining scam.
