Liverpool bid to get stranded fans to Kiev fails

In a statement, World Choice Sports said that it had been forced to cancel three charter flights into Kiev's Borispyl airport after it failed to secure the landing slots, blaming the cancellations on the destination airport.

"It's fair to say Liverpool fans are ready, we're ready... we'll see you in Kiev", Oxlade-Chamberlain said.

He posted several messages on Twitter on Thursday and Friday which gave hope to fans.

"We are hugely disappointed and frustrated at the utter shambles loyal fans have been put through". With support of @Vitaliy_Klychko, #Kievairport & carrier we had plane & landing slot but crew were coming from the U.S. and crew rest time a huge barrier.

One of those planes was rescheduled to leave Liverpool John Lennon Airport on Friday morning but the other two flights remain cancelled leaving 650 supporters stranded.

"Supporters who were booked on flight numbers ET8704 and ET8706, and those who were unable to travel on the rearranged ET8700 flight booked through Worldchoice Sports, will be able to claim the refund", the club said on their website.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson has confirmed that talks are underway with Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev, in order to get flights for Liverpool fans sorted out. "Hopefully they can find an alternative route but, if they can't, I am sure they will support us back in Liverpool".

Worldchoice Sports publicly apologised to fans in a statement on Twitter.

Financial adviser Jason McGimpsey was told on Thursday his flight was cancelled. I go to practically all Liverpool games and I haven't missed a home game in almost four years. "Games like this come along every 10 years if you're lucky, I should be excited and instead I'm just gutted".

"Obviously I'm absolutely devastated not to be involved in such a big game but at the same time really excited for the boys and for the club in what could be a very special day", he said.
