Malaysian police search five places linked to ousted PM Najib

Malaysia's Anwar says Najib likely headed to jail

Mahathir has barred Najib from leaving the nation which is for the pending investigations. Najib has denied any wrongdoing and was cleared by the attorney general at the time, while the fund has repeatedly denied any misconduct.

Police conducted searches through the night and into the morning today at five places linked to ousted prime minister Najib Razak, including the family home where he stays, a senior police officer said. He declined to give details.

Four other locations were raided, including other condominiums in his name, and his prime ministerial office.

Nurul Izzah, Anwar's daughter, said her father's release was a gift ahead of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan which begins on Thursday in Malaysia. He says the search was done under the anti-money laundering act.

On Tuesday, Mahathir said he expected to be prime minister for one or two more years, setting off talk of differences between the two.

When asked when Najib would be called to have his statement recorded, Dr Mahathir said it was up to the police.

Mahathir said the government would seek to retrieve billions of dollars laundered from 1MDB to repay government debts that have piled up over the years.

"This is important because the amount is big and it can help us clear some debts", he said, adding that the total amount which can be recovered has yet to be determined.

"The main issue is of corruption, particularly 1MDB as well as the money that was embezzled by the previous government", Mahathir told reporters on Wednesday. "We will appeal for the money to be returned to Malaysia".

Pakatan Harapan (PH), the centre-left coalition that is now led by 92-year-old former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, won 48% of the vote against the BN's 34% in last week's poll, gaining a substantial parliamentary majority and 57 additional seats. He said his new government is also seeking to cut wastage in the government, including possibly axing 17,000 political appointees.

Abdul Razak Idris said he would discuss with MACC officials whether he should lodge another report under sections 217 and 218 of the penal code regarding certain public servants protecting a person from punishment or property from forfeiture with MACC or the police. The tax has been blamed for raising the cost of living and has angered many Malaysians.

On Friday, Mahathir said that the country's head of state will pardon Anwar, whose case has dominated Malaysian politics for years.

Anwar will have to become a member of parliament - most likely through a by-election - in order to be sworn in as prime minister.
