Monaco Grand Prix 2018 race results: Full classification - Ricciardo wins, Hamilton third

No thanks Vettel and Hamilton in discussion ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo overcame a mid-race power loss to win the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday.

Hamilton leads Vettel by 17 points after five rounds of the 21-race championship, and the Briton will have been boosted at least by his car's performance after a disappointing showing in Monaco past year. Drivers are not allowed to overtake when the VSC is deployed and must maintain a steady speed.

Ricciardo's team messed up a pit stop in the 2016 race, costing him victory, and he was taking nothing for granted in his quest for a seventh career grand prix win.

The Australian was fastest in 2016 qualifying but lost out in the race to Hamilton.

Vettel shaved a few points off championship leader Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who finished third.

Kimi Raikkonen secured fourth, 0.695 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas in fifth, who in turn had Esteban Ocon not far behind him in sixth.

Renault's Nico Hulkenberg was the fastest driver in Q2 and will be starting 11th, a tenth of second behind Gasly.

Saturday in Monaco felt bittersweet for Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner after he watched Daniel Ricciardo storm to pole while Max Verstappen failed to get out on track, thanks to a crash in final practice earlier in the day.

Monaco is home to most of the drivers, including Ricciardo.

"It's frustrating with such a fast auto not to have both cars on the front row of the grid". Whoever is leading after the first lap is likely to control the pace of the field in order to protect his tyres, comfortable in the knowledge that overtaking is almost impossible without a mistake from the vehicle in front.

"For example, maybe we change it one or two percent during a whole race so to go seven percent is a lot".

Although it will only be a one-stop race, that single tyre change could still swing the result of the race.

Verstappen will now start from the back of the grid and it is very likely that Red Bull will elect to start him from the pit lane instead and keep him well clear of any potential turn one mayhem. The display eventually came back, but the tyre problems persisted and it soon became clear that only a mistake from the auto in front would result in an overtaking opportunity.

However, Red Bull will be sceptical of the size of the upgrade because Renault have under-delivered in the past. "Just the race tomorrow and then we will celebrate", said Ricciardo. "I don't know how much of the radio was broadcast, but we had a lot to deal with during the race". I wanted to close my eyes and start crying because I thought that was it, that my race was over, " Ricciardo told Sky Sports. We got it back. We won Monaco feels good.

A largely processional race under cloudy skies saw the safety auto stay in the pits, with only a virtual safety vehicle needed in the closing laps.

"He was not going to give this race up this weekend".
