The BSE Sensex stayed in the positive terrain throughout the session and hit a high of 35,596.15 before finishing at 35,535.79, a rise of 289.52 points, or 0.82 per cent, ahead of Karnataka polls. Around 10.25 a.m., the broader Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) traded at 10,921.80 points - up 115.20 points or 1.07 per cent - from its previous close.

On the other hand, shares of ICICI Bank (up 0.69 per cent), IDFC Bank (up 0.60 per cent) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 0.41 per cent) were up around that time. Nifty Pharma index recovered to close 0.19 per cent higher following six straight sessions of declines.

It touched a high of 35,993.53 points and a low of 35,497.92 during the intra-day trade.

The equity market was ended on a weaker note as United States and Asian sharesdeclined amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Korean peninsula.

The 30 share barometer was trading lower by 245.23 points (-0.69 percent) at 35298.71. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.49 percent while Japan's Nikkei was down by 0.38 percent in early trade on Wednesday. China's Shanghai Composite Index too inched 0.25 percent.

The BJP was leading in 120 seats while the ruling Congress was in the front in 59 constituencies in Karnataka, according to early trends.

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors sold scrips worth Rs 518.47 crore, while the domestic institutional investors bought stocks worth Rs 531.33 crore.
