Simpson extends lead at Players

Webb Simpson finally has to laugh after holing another birdie putt this one 28 feet from off the green at the 15th hole in the second round of the Players Championship

In his final round at the THE PLAYERS Championship, Ted Potter, Jr. hit 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation, finishing at 6 under for the tournament.

Jason Day, among those at 9-under 207, had a four-shot lead when he won The Players two years ago. "It's rare as a golfer where everything comes together".

No one ever played a better round at the TPC Sawgrass than Webb Simpson.

He has made only two bogeys and one double-bogey in 54 holes and is at 19-under par 197, equaling Greg Norman's tournament record. The Great White Shark went on to post 24 under in his victory that year, a number that is certainly within reach for Simpson with the way he's been playing this week. "It was a different feeling (from his round on Friday). I missed a bunch of birdies but I come away pretty happy with the way I played".

Simpson's shot on 17 rolled to within three feet of the cup, and he knocked home the birdie putt without any problem. He and Spieth are 11 shots back of Webb Simpson (-19), who has been absolutely terrific for the first three rounds.

World No 9 Hideki Matsuyama was another casualty, with much of the damage being done by taking 13 shots to negotiate the 17th over the two rounds, while Phil Mickelson also packed his bags after he bogeyed the last three holes to slump to eight over par.

Day said he felt he could have been closer but for a couple of mistakes added to some breaks not going his way. I want to approach tomorrow just like I did today. "The scoreboard doesn't affect me at all, I'm just out here playing golf and seeing what I can get".

T4. Jason Dufner, Jimmy Walker, Xander Schauffele, Jason Day, Charl Schwartzel (-9): Dufner pretty easily had the best day out of anyone in this group with a 6-under 66, but it's hard to see anyone here running down Simpson from 10 back and beating Johnson by a pair.

Woods dominated the first 12 holes, during which he had eight birdies, but then the birdies dried up. The 65 was his lowest career score in 66 going around TPC Sawgrass.

It was his lowest round on the PGA Tour since a 65 in the second round of the Wyndham Championship at the end of the 2015 regular season.

But Sunday you've got to give the course a little more respect, and I wanted to do that today. "I managed to stay very patient out there". But he cooled off a bit on the back nine, three-putting for bogey on 14 and failing to get up-and-down for birdie on 16. Spieth three-putted from 35 feet, though he shot 68 and ended three straight years missing the cut. "10 to 15 feet today, and anywhere inside, which was probably the first time this year that's been the case", Spieth said, per Bob Harig of ESPN.com.

It's not over, I suppose, but man it feels over.

So I've got to come out tomorrow with that same mindset that I have a few par-fives, I have a few short par-fours, and there's going to be birdie chances, so I can't force anything, even if I'm even through 12 holes. He birdied the 11th and, ultimately, the 18th. I think I was flawless inside of 10 to 15 feet today and anywhere inside, which was probably the first time this year.

That likely would be enough to grant Simpson his fifth PGA Tour victory.
