Sleeping in on weekends may extend your life

Sleeping in on the weekend can compensate for lost sleep study says

Weekends are my saving grace - I wake up at 4 a.m. during the week, and I have zero qualms about sleeping until 10 on the weekends (or as late as my children allow).

According to a study by Swedish and USA researchers, people under 65-years-old are at greater risk of death if they get less than five hours sleep on the weekends.

There is no clear answer yet on why sleeping on weekends makes a difference.

"Sleep duration is important for longevity", said Dr Torbjorn Akerstedt, first author of the study, at the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University, and Karolinska Institute, also in the Swedish capital.

Russia’s Abramovich obtains Israeli citizenship to become Israel’s wealthiest man
The move coincides with a delayed renewal of his United Kingdom visa, which some view as part of a crackdown on wealthy Russians. His spokesman would not comment on reports citizenship had been granted.

Epidemiologists who spoke with The Washington Post described the result as a plausible finding, if not a statistically robust one, that deserves more investigation.

Lack of enough sleep can lead to serious health problems. We can't deposit zzzs over the weekend and expect to cash them out later. A cohort of 43,880 subjects was followed for 13 years through record?linkages. Across the week, older people had more consistent and more often sleep over a shorter time span.

They did account for other factors influencing sleep, such as alcohol and coffee consumption, smoking habits, shift work and more. Short sleepers slept for less than five hours per night, medium sleepers about seven hours and long sleepers for nine or more hours per night.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults aged 18-60 get at least seven hours of sleep per night. They are the ones who can compensate with longer rest on the weekends, because there is not as much of a deficit. The performance of sleep-deprived individuals was no different among those who reported feeling alert and those who said they felt exhausted.
