Subtropical Storm Alberto moves to crash Memorial Day outings

After reaching the coast, the storm will bring powerful winds and heavy rain as it moves into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, the U.S National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season's first storm, Alberto, is set to make landfall east of Pensacola, Fla., in the early afternoon - just shy of hurricane intensity. But this is nature.

"I'm doing this because every time we have a hard rain, it floods at my house", Whitlock said.

Hazardous storm surge warnings were in effect for portions of the Eastern Gulf Coast, including areas Alberto was not expected to pass directly through, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The heaviest rain bands and strongest winds began coming ashore around 10 a.m. Monday in Panama City Beach.

Alabama and MS have activated their National Guards in preparation for Subtropical Storm Alberto, which is expected to make Landfall in Florida on Monday. Some of those storms could be severe, he said.

There also is a potential for storms and rain throughout the rest of the week, Corless said. This means that tropical storm conditions (winds of 40 miles per hour sustained) are possible.

A news release from Florida Gov. Rick Scott said that for Taylor County, "Voluntary evacuations have been issued for those in coastal zones and beach communities (Keaton, Dekel, Cedar, Dark Islands), mobile homes, RV parks and low-lying areas".

The National Weather Service projects Alberto will hit Alabama starting Saturday, with the state's heaviest rains falling closer to the coast, through the middle of next week.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for a stretch of coastline between Florida's Suwannee River and the Alabama-Florida border.

Alberto isn't taking a bead on the Carolinas, but the storm has stirred up enough moisture to make for rainy and soggy conditions, according to the National Weather Service. Low around 71. Breezy, with a north wind 15 to 20 miles per hour becoming southwest after midnight. The storm could clip Apalachicola the night before.

If you're traveling on Sunday or Memorial Day, the worst weather will be in areas west and northwest of Central Florida, including much of the Panhandle and the west coast of the state. As the center of the storm approaches land, a dome of high pressure over the upper Midwest will slow it down.

Authorities say conditions are especially risky with flooding rains coming overnight and on a holiday weekend when many people have outdoor plans.

However, the storm should not be taken as an indicator of how this hurricane season will play out, he said.
