Sweden Telling All Its People How to Prepare for War

Sweden originally published and distributed the "If War Comes" booklet during the World War II and will now issue an updated version during the country's Emergency Preparedness Week from May 28 to June 3.

The Swedish government has begun sending all 4.8m of the country's households a public information leaflet telling the population, for the first time in more than half a century, what to do in the event of a war.

While the booklet doesn't specify where an attack might come from, Sweden and other countries in the region have been on high alert since Russian Federation annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in March 2014. Sweden has accused Moscow of repeatedly infringing on its airspace and territorial waters - claims the Kremlin dismisses as "Russiaphobia".

Sweden recently voted to bring back military conscription, as well as reversing spending cuts of arms and unveiling a joint plan with Denmark to tackle Russian cyber-crime and "disinformation".

The leaflet also includes advice on how to spot propaganda, find a bomb shelter and get clean water.

And Stockholm has started reversing military spending cuts and past year staged its biggest military exercises in almost a quarter of a century, as well as voting to reintroduce conscription and unveilling joint plans with Denmark to counter Russian cyber-attacks and disinformation.

"In Sweden, there is a duty to contribute to total defence, says the pamphlet". It illustrates pictures of warplanes and frantic families fleeing their homes.

The brochure, titled "Om krisen eller kriget kommer (If crisis or war comes)", was compiled by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and instructs civilians on what to do if "their everyday life was turned upside down".

The pamphlet, written in English, reads: "Although Sweden is safer than many other countries, there are still threats to our security and independence".

"We all have a responsibility for our country's safety and preparedness, so it's important for everyone to also have knowledge on how we can contribute if something serious occurs", MSB General Director Dan Eliasson said in a statement. Sweden was neutral in 1943.

Sweden has not been at war with another country for more than 200 years.

"Even today, attacks are taking place against our IT systems and attempts are being made to influence us using false information", it claims, above a list of "potential attacks" including airstrikes, sabotage of infrastructure, terror attacks and "attempts to influence Sweden's decision makers or inhabitants".

But worryingly, the booklet advises that if the country is attacked, it will "never give up".
