Tornado watch issued for part of NJ as storms sweep across state

Damaging winds and hail are the greatest severe weather threats Saturday afternoon. However there is the chance for an isolated tornado

That watch was extended to Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties until 9 p.m. Heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, flash flooding, lightning and hail are all possible.

A line of strong storms will move through between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., Meteorologist Chris Lambert said.

The risk will be slightly lower for Suffolk County, the weather service said in a 6 a.m. update. Moderate instability and somewhat stronger effective shear (compared to areas further south) would support some severe wind and hail risk with any surface-based storms that can become established near the boundary across northern IL.

The amount of sun that pokes through the clouds depends on how much dry air pushes into the state. There will be a high near 80, with a west northwest wind of 5 to 7 miles per hour. It's going to get incredibly humid and warm, with most high temperatures 85 to 90 degrees.

Thunderstorms along with another chance of severe storms are possible Tuesday with the focus shifting across the southern half of the viewing area. The high will be 67 degrees. Chances of thunderstorms are 20 percent before 3 a.m. Thursday.
