Trump berates DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over border security

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen advised colleagues she had been near after being criticized by President donald-trump within a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, " the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing a few former and current officials knowledgeable about the episode.

The Times also reported, citing current and former staffers as the source of the claims, that Nielsen has already written a letter of resignation, but has yet to turn it in.

Trump reportedly railed against Nielsen on Wednesday, saying that she failed to adequately secure the United States border, former officials with knowledge of the incident said to The Times.

Trump was said to be angry that he was robbed of a talking point that his policies had driven down illegal immigrant crossings.

When pressed on Trump's remarks, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the Times that "the president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders".

In a statement, Nielsen said she meant to "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda".

She added that "border security is the most basic and necessary responsibility of a sovereign nation" and said she would "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda".

"We've very much toughened up the border, but the laws are awful", Mr. Trump said according to the report.

Instead, she told the newspaper that she will "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda" as head of almost 20,000 department employees.

"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweeted Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton.

"Someone, as sources have put it, has gotten it in his head that she is a Bush family plant", Haberman wrote of Trump's suspicions of Nielsen. "The laws in this country for immigration and illegal immigration are absolutely disgusting".

Trump's anger about immigration has grown in recent weeks, according to several officials.

Trump has clashed with Nielsen for weeks. A conviction for illegal entry carries a maximum penalty of six months in custody for first-time crossers, though they usually do far less time, and two years for repeat offenses.

According to the Times, Trump launched a tirade about the lack of progress in deterring immigrants at the U.S. -Mexico border.
