Utah hostage Josh Holt released from Venezuelan prison

Trump, in a tweet, did not identify Holt by name but Utah Senator Orrin Hatch confirmed that the Utah resident had been freed.

After two years in captivity in Venezuela, Pocatello native Joshua Holt will be released.

President Trump celebrated the development in some tweets Saturday as the newly released couple are expected to land in D.C. this evening.

A Utah man jailed in Venezuela on weapons charges almost two years ago was released Saturday after US officials and his family pressed for his freedom from the South American country.

"Over the last two years, I've worked with two Presidential Administrations, countless diplomatic contacts, ambassadors from all over the world, a network of contacts in Venezuela, and President Maduro himself, and I could not be more honored to be able to reunite Josh with his sweet, long-suffering family in Riverton", Hatch said.

Holt, age 26, was arrested after he traveled to Venezuela to marry his wife before state authorities apprehended him and held him hostage.

"Please, my fellow Americans, don't allow me to continue suffering in Venezuela", Holt said on Facebook. The great people of Utah will be very happy!

Senator Hatch said Holt was on his way to the United States and praised Corker's "pivotal efforts". Holt's mother, Laurie Holt, said all along that her son and his wife were wrongly accused.

He surfaced in a video calling on the USA government to help get him out during a prison protest earlier this month by jailed opposition activists. They have been imprisoned in Caracas awaiting trial ever since. "The people have taken the entire prison". They're saying they want to kill me. Corker met with Maduro on Friday in Caracas, where he apparently pushed for Holt's release. In one video, he said: "I've been begging my government for two years. They say they're doing things but I'm still here".
