World Health Organization plans to eliminate trans fats from food by 2023

WHO plans to strike trans-fats from global food supply

But given their link to cardiovascular disease, trans fats have also been blamed for more than 500,000 deaths annually, according to World Health Organization figures. World Health Organization is also using this milestone to work with governments, the food industry, academia and civil society to make food systems healthier for future generations, including by eliminating industrially-produced trans fats.

That's also probably why, for this initiative, WHO is partnering with Tom Frieden, the NY health commissioner who got the trans-fat ban passed.

The initiative, launched May 14, will offer countries across the globe guidance on how to remove these artificial fats from their food, with an ultimate goal of worldwide eradication.

Heart attacks and strokes fell by more than 6 percent three years after some NY counties banned trans fats, researchers reported last year. Cargill has quit producing them, instead substituting a blend of palm oil and healthier vegetable oils like canola and sunflower.

"You don't need to change the taste or cost or availability for great food". But trans fats remain widely used where regulators and food makers have been slower to take action. Foodmakers prefer these fats because they prolong the shelf life of oils.

In a statement, WHO's head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called the prospect of finally eradicating trans fats "a global win in the fight against cardiovascular disease".

There are two main sources of trans-fats: natural sources (in the dairy products and meat of ruminants such as cows and sheep) and industrially-produced sources (partially hydrogenated oils). "They used them in such fare as doughnuts, cookies and deep-fried foods", Stobbe continues. They raise bad (LDL) cholesterol level and lower good (HDL) cholesterol levels, which increases risk of heart disease and stroke. Later, New York City and California also moved to limit the amount restaurants could put in food - it got them mocked in Middle America as nanny states at the time, but certainly hasn't affected the food quality in either place. In addition, many countries have not explained the health risks that these fats pose. "Therefore, they are a euphemism for snack and other foods containing them". This includes the review of dietary sources of industrially-produced trans fats and the landscape for required policy change. Numerous fats are in foods or oils made by local producers.

In a statement Monday, the United Nations health agency said eliminating trans fats is critical to preventing deaths worldwide. Health advocates say trans fats are the most harmful fat in the food supply.

"The removal of trans fats from the food supply as an additive counts as one of the major public health victories of the last decade", said Laura MacCleery, policy director for the Washington, D.C. -based advocacy group, Center for Science in the Public Interest.

You'll be happy to know that the quiz tomorrow will be multiple choice, pass/fail.
