Yates wins Stage 11 to extend Giro lead

Britain's Simon Yates crosses the finish line to win the 11th stage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race from Assisi to Osimo Italy Wednesday May 16

For Kiwi cyclist George Bennett, stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia could be seen as a microcosm of his race so far.

Yates does not carry a calculator, but he will be doing the math when he is racing.

Yates attacked on the final climb with a kilometre to ride to claim his second stage win this year, finishing two seconds ahead of defending champion Tom Dumoulin. "I felt good all day and I'm really pleased that I took advantage of the opportunity".

Chaves had entered the day in second place overall but dropped behind early on in the rolling 244-kilometer (152-mile) stage from Penne to Gualdo Tadino in Umbria, which was the race's longest. These are good times for the British 25-year-old, twin brother of teammate Adam Yates.

After 11 stages of Simon Yates ahead of Tom Dumoulin for 47 seconds.

But there is Tom Dumoulin. He underscored his intentions to win a second consecutive Giro. Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome lost more time on the leaders and his chances of winning are disappearing.

"It's not just me and Tom", Yates said.

"I'm not 100 per cent obviously after all the issues I've had on the right, but I'm getting there and I'm optimistic I'm going to come right".

"He is flying and I'm genuinely happy for him". In recent times, they have not raced a similar distance against each other in a flat time trial. He (Dumoulin) was chasing me all the way in the final there, it was an extremely hard final. "I feel as if I've been progressing throughout the race and still just chipping away and trying to do the best I can". "But first, there's this weekend".

After another flat stage, the race features a climb up Monte Zoncolan on Saturday and a gruelling leg through the Dolomite Range on Sunday.

"It's not a two-way battle, because there are four to five guys who are still close".

Yates would hold off the Dutchman to take the stage victory in a time of 3 hours, 25min and 53sec. "I'm going to keep plugging away, I'm motivated, the team's motivated and we're going to do as much as we can".
