YouTube to revamp music service, charge more for ad-free shows

YouTube to launch new music streaming service on May 22

Rumors have circulated that Google Play Music - Google's original music offering and the mechanism for their 50,000 song music locker and music purchases - will be killed off by the end of this year in favor of the new service. Subscribers will get YouTube Music added for free, but it's not clear what will eventually happen to the older service - it does offer some features that YouTube Music doesn't, like the option to upload digital tracks to the web and stream them to any device.

In regards to the future of Play Music, "nothing will change", according to Google's official post.

In fact, if you are a subscriber to Google Play Music you get a YouTube Music Premium membership as part of your subscription.

The split makes a lot of sense when you consider how many people use YouTube for playing music for free despite a plethora of excellent streaming experiences like Spotify and Apple Music. Right now, Music is just a modified YouTube app that requires a Red subscription.

In addition to millions of official songs, other content includes thousands of playlists, artist radio, remixes, covers, and live versions.

YouTube has announced one of its biggest ever overhauls to its music section, YouTube Music, a "streaming service made for music with the magic of YouTube".

YouTube Premium rolls out in markets where YouTube Red is available in already and then later on to new markets (Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom).

YouTube has finally revealed its grand plan for music streaming and it comes in the form of YouTube Music. Both come with a new mobile app and desktop player designed around listening to music and watching music videos, where users can set up play lists and also get recommendations based on previous listening and location. At the airport? We'll recommend something relaxing before the flight. That also includes ad-free, background play and downloads across all of YouTube, plus the promise of more original shows from all over the world. It's also worth noting that the YouTube Music will only remove ads from music videos and not the YouTube Originals.

Cohen and Fowler also emphasized that Tuesday's rollout will be a soft launch and the service will develop over the coming weeks.

Besides, the company has rolled out a new feature called Take a Break which will allow the user to tell the YouTube app to remind you to take a break after watching videos for a specific time.
