Android Messages now lets you text on desktop

Android Messages for Web

For now, Android Messages for Web can be found here.

Google on Monday, June 18, United States time, announced that it was officially launching new features for Android Messages including the highly-requested support for web browsers.

Google is today launching a web app of Android Messages called Messages for web. Depending on how many messages you send with pictures and other large files, it could be a deal-breaker in some situations. Starting today, for example, the company is rolling out desktop support for Android Messages, which will let you send and receive texts from a computer. The Android Messages web client is now live at messages.android.com, where you'll see a set of instructions and the large QR Code needed to pair your phone. Text, images, and stickers are all supported on the web version.

Very soon, you will be able to send SMSes straight from your desktop browser.

Google's help page for the Messages web interface has also gone live.

The company also announced a few other features that will come to the Messages app over the next week, including built-in GIF search; Smart Replies, which suggest English language text responses and emoji for now; preview web links in conversations; and the ability to copy one-time passwords with a tap. You can optionally have the webpage remember the computer, or leave that toggle unchecked and have the browser forgotten when you close the tab. This will show reply suggestions based on the context of your conversation. That said, Google doesn't always guess correctly, but smart replies can still be useful from time to time.

This last feature is also similar to a new addition coming to iMessage in iOS 12.
