Banksy print stolen from Toronto exhibit, police say

A man walks past a new work by street artist Banksy on a wall by the Barbican Centre

Later Thursday, police released video appearing to show the theft, while the exhibition was still being set up.

Canadian police have launched an investigation after the theft of a Banksy print from an unauthorized exhibit of the guerrilla graffiti artist's work in Toronto.

And quickly, the thief grabs the art and makes a run for it.

The arts promotion company behind the show confirmed that the print went missing during the setup of the exhibition, which opened this week.

He was described as wearing glasses, a black jacket, a green, camouflage baseball hat, blue jeans that were rolled at the bottom, grey running shoes and glasses. They say the stolen work is worth about $45,000.

The show features privately owned art curated by Banksy's former agent and collectively valued at over $35 million, according to organizers.

Displaying about 80 works on loan from collectors, including sculptures, screen prints, canvases and multimedia pieces, it has been billed as the largest collection of Banksy works assembled. Lazarides, who stopped working with Banksy in 2009, defended the exhibition.

"Then a month later I got a mail from the co-ordinator Grayson Perry asking me to submit something so I sent it again", Banksy said on Instagram. He passes through two large galleries in the midst of being installed before arriving at a wall hung with several framed prints. "She said the thief may have taken only one Banksy piece out of fear of discovery".
