Blood Moon 2018: How to watch longest lunar eclipse

Phases of the Blood Moon

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are directly aligned, and the moon's orbit brings it directly into Earth's shadow.

The longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st Century occurs in July but will be visible only to those in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Mathematically, the longest total lunar eclipse possible would last one hour and 47 minutes.

The eclipse will be the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. This NASA chart by eclipse expert Fred Espenak shows details and visibility projections for this "blood moon" eclipse.

As per express.co.uk reports, the moon will be visible on July 27.

A picturesque blood moon is all set to light the sky once again next month and according to doomsday preachers it will be the end of the world. The chain of the lunar eclipse phenomenon began in the year 2014. Yes, there will be a total lunar eclipse and full moon on July 27-28. But instead of darkening, as most objects do under a shadow, the moon will acquire an orange or reddish tinge because the earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight.

People living in Asia and Australia will witness it in early hours of the morning on July 28th and those living in Europe, and Africa will be able to see it during the evening on July 27th.

The reason why Blood Moon will be the longest lunar eclipse is because this time the moon will be passing directly through the darkest part of the earth's shadow, known as Umbra. This eclipse, however, will last a full 40 minutes longer. Rather than the moon disappearing from view, as happens in a solar eclipse, skywatchers can expect to see it turn a rather sinister shade of crimson, which is why many call it a "blood moon".

Just a few days after the lunar eclipse, Mars will pass by Earth at its closest point to since 2003.

According to Earth Sky, people living in Europe, Asia, Africa, New Zealand and Australia will be the luckiest ones, because the moon will be visible to them. The 2003 close approach was the closest in almost 60,000 years, with the two planets within 55.8m km of each other.
