#CanadianGP triumph means a lot, says Vettel in his 50th F1 win

5 things we learned from the Canadian Grand Prix

"I think when we look back on this weekend we will accept the fact that, yeah, in hindsight, it would have been nice if we had more time to prepare on the hyper-soft, but it wasn't the case", he told reporters.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who dominated much of practice, turned in a mature, error-free effort to take third place and quiet the storm of criticism swirling around him following a string of errors and crashes.

In the final five laps, Hamilton pushed Ricciardo hard in the battle for fourth but the Australian - victor at Monaco last time out - just held on with the four-time world champion forced to relinquish his standings lead as he recorded his lowest placing of the season.

This is Vettel's second victory in Canada, having won his first for Red Bull in 2013, and marks his 50th career victory - only Michael Schumacher, Hamilton and Alain Prost have scored more.

"I think it was just a combination of things", he admitted. "Everybody needs to assess how to improve performance".

Starting cleanly, Vettel was pulling away from the field when a crash between Brandon Hartley and hometown favorite Lance Stroll brought out the safety auto in the very first lap.

It was Ferrari's first win in Canada since 2004 and came from their first pole there in 17 years.

"Grazie", the German said to his Italy-based team before grabbing a red and yellow Ferrari flag and waving it on his way to the podium. "Forty years after Gilles won his Grand Prix here, it's nice to show Ferrari is still alive".

"Pole position is always important", said Vettel.

And it came as the event celebrated a rousing win 40 years ago by another Ferrari driver - Gilles Villeneuve of Berthierville, Que, whose son Jacques drove his dad's 1978 Ferrari around the track in the pre-race parade lap. I'm extremely proud to become part of that story. He didn't reply even to the apology from his race engineer: "Sorry, mate".

"It could get a lot worse". When asked if it was an easy victory for him, Vettel replied: "No, it's never easy". "I'm just grateful the engine made it". That might provide an internal headache for Red Bull, a team that has been known for financially rewarding its drivers for claiming the fastest lap of the race.

It was also a short day for Stroll, a Montreal native who locked up with Hartley heading into Turn 5 on the first lap.

The same issue occurred at the 2014 Chinese Grand Prix and Whiting believes it is due to a misinterpretation of the lap countdown on F1's world feed. He earned his first Formula One points with a ninth-place finish at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve past year.
