CDC: Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melons

Michigan's Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services have issued a warning about a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon.

The people who got sick reported getting chicks and ducklings from places such as feed supply stores, websites, hatcheries and from relatives, the CDC said in a news release.

The people who took ill came from IL (6), IN (11), MI (32), Missouri (10), and OH (1), the agency said.

So far only pre-cut melons have been linked, but it's important to remember food safety measures if you buy whole melons.

Consumers who bought pre-cut melon from Walmart or Kroger, including fruit salad mixes with melon, should throw it away, officials said. The CDC said it is working to identify a common supplier that might be the original source. Consumers who have purchased pre-cut melon from Walmart or Kroger, including fruit salad mixes with melon, are urged not to eat it and throw it away. Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 30, 2018 to May 28, 2018, and cases range in age from less than 1 to 97 years old.

Salmonella symptoms tend to include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours after someone eats the contaminated food.

Walmart and Kroger have removed all cut melon associated with the outbreak. Most people are able to fully recover in 4 to 7 days.

The CDC says this particular salmonella outbreak could mean more hospitalized people than usual. The elderly, infants and people with compromised immune systems have the highest risk for serious illness. In rare cases, an infection can lead to death unless a patient receives prompt treatment with antibiotics.
