Dayton, Swanson challenge 'immoral' border separations of families

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions receives the National Sheriffs Association Lifetime Achievement Award before he speaks at their convention in New Orleans Monday

"It's a real exaggeration", Sessions said. "In Nazi Germany, they were keeping the Jews from leaving the country".

"This is a serious matter", he added. "This is why we need more Republicans elected in November." - tweet Saturday. "Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!"

The separations are a effect of a Trump administration policy to maximize criminal prosecutions of people caught trying to enter the USA illegally.

Almost 2,000 minors have been separated from their families since Sessions announced the policy in April.

He also said that the government is already spending $1 billion a year taking care of children who entered the country illegally, with families or unaccompanied. Under the previous administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation.

The former U.S. attorneys also pointed out that dedicating federal prosecutors to prosecuting misdemeanor illegal-entry cases could take time away from a host of more serious cases, including those involving terrorism, violent crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and public corruption.

He put out a statement Monday saying, "as a father of two daughters, I too do not want to see children separated from their parents". "By entering our country illegally, often in unsafe circumstances, illegal immigrants have put their children at risk".

Now we have nearly 2,000 kids in custody.

Democrats have seized on the family separation issue, swarming detention centers in Texas to highlight the policy. It does not call for family separation.

The letter said the policy had "produced a tragic and unsustainable result".

Michigan Radio reached out to the entire state Congressional delegation Friday, asking their opinion on the Trump administration's policy on separating families at the border.

Sessions' speech Monday closely mirrored that of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who also spoke at the same Sheriffs' Association event and doubled-down on the administration's new policy.

Almost 2,000 children were separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May after Sessions announced the new "zero-tolerance" policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution. Under Secretary Nielsen's tenure, the Department of Homeland Security has a track record of neither. "We do not have the luxury of pretending that all individuals coming to this country as a family unit are in fact a family".
