Democratic attorneys general urge end to border separations

President Trump's 2020 campaign manager called Tuesday for Trump to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and end Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

The administration's effort has been made more hard as Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen appeared to break with Sessions Monday, saying the policy was not meant to be a deterrent to immigrants contemplating illegal crossings.

"We do not want to separate parents from their children".

"Your Zero Tolerance policy has resulted in the unnecessary trauma and suffering of innocent children", they wrote in a letter published Monday on Medium.

Sessions announced the policy that separates all families and detains immigrant children at the US-Mexico border in May as a deterrence measure, saying, "If you don't want your child to be separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally".

A bipartisan group of former United States attorneys have released a letter that calls for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end his department's "zero tolerance" immigration policy.

- Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson and attorneys general from 19 other states sent a letter to United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the U.S. Department of Justice Tuesday asking them to stop separating children from their parents at the border.

"As former USA attorneys, we know that none of these consequences - nor the policy itself - is required by law". Adults seeking asylum are sometimes not informed of the whereabouts of their children. Meanwhile, the South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project supports more than 1,000 unaccompanied children in detention centers across the state of South Texas.

Sessions announced the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy in April.

On Tuesday, a a Justice spokesman said that Sessions' reference to deterrence related only to the policy provision that all illegal immigrants would be prosecuted, not that children would be separated from parents as a result.

Trump said Wednesday that he would sign an order that would stop his own policy of separating families at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Administration officials, denying they have a "family separation policy", have said Congress can put an end to the crisis by passing new immigration laws.

"President Trump has said this can not continue", he concluded.

"This balanced approach is especially critical when we are faced with persons seeking entry who may be eligible under established USA laws for the protection of asylum, as they flee persecution, horrific violence, or danger in their home countries", they said. Administration officials like Sessions, senior White House adviser Stephen Miller, and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders have all attempted to excuse the policy using conflicting and often confusing narratives, with Miller claiming that the decision to enact the brutal policy was "simple".

As of Wednesday, June 20, the Trump administration has set up multiple "tender age" shelters to lock infants and young children that the US forcibly removed from their parents at the border.
