Doctor Suspended After Video Shows Her Mocking Black Student Having Anxiety Attack

ER doctor suspended for mocking black patient suffering anxiety attack: ‘You people come here for drugs’

Samuel Bardwell, 20, a newly enrolled student at West Valley College in Saratoga was rushed to El Camino Hospital in nearby Los Gatos when he suffered what doctors say was a severe anxiety attack and passed out following the school's first summer basketball workout on June 11.

Notice of the alleged 'mocking' at the hands of Keegstra followed the basketball player's father, Donald, who was by his son's bedside posting the video on social media, which soon led to the episode going viral.

His father filmed the physician in the Emergency Room who they identified as Dr. Beth Keegstray when he was seen at around 2:30 a.m.

"Bardwell, who is 7'1" tall, told NBC Bay Area he waited three hours to see a doctor, and, when Keegstra finally did show up, she was accompanied by a security guard.

"Are you dead, sir?" the physician continued, pointing at Bardwell.

"I'm sorry, sir, you were the least sick of all of the people who are here who are dying", Keegstra told him.

Keegstra - who has over 20 years of experience in emergency medicine, according to her LinkedIn profile - didn't immediately respond to SFGate's request for comment.

An El Camino Hospital spokesperson told the news outlet that, "Obviously we take this very seriously". He said the doctor "has been removed from the work schedule, pending further investigation", and the hospital has "expressed our honest apologies and are working directly with the patient on this matter".

Donald Bardwell told The Chronicle that Keegstra was accusatory from the start. ABC News and the Associated Press also reported that she could not be reached.

He said Samuel Bardwell was taking Klonopin only "when he felt bad, not all the time". I said, 'Please, dad, can you please take out your phone?.

Dr. Keegstra, who was employed by Vituity and was under contract to the hospital, is no longer allowed to work at the El Camino hospital.

As they continued to argue about Bardwell's care, the doctor asked him whether he needed narcotics. Now don't try and tell me you can't move.

"Sit up!" she yells twice as she's spotted pulling the patient by the arm.

"This is ridiculous", Keegstra interrupted and cursed at the patient. "She never said her name, she never asked for his name, she never really examined him".

The doctor could then be heard telling a nurse to give Bardwell IV fluids and send him home. You have changed your story every (expletive) time.

The doctor offered some belittling to go along with her treatment.

Keegstra has worked at El Camino Hospital since 2010 but was not a staff employee.

With her patient in shock over her remark, she continued swearing.

The video begins with the concerned father telling Dr. Keegstra that Samuel keeps losing consciousness and vomiting.

"He can't inhale!" Keegstra said.

"I guess she was so angry and assumed he was a druggie and had drugs in his system, she thought she could talk to us any which way we wanted", Bardwell told the San Francisco Gate.
