Germany's Merkel calls Trump's G7 slams 'sobering,' 'depressing'

Two tweets and an insult spoil G-7 unity

On Sunday, Trudeau ignored the barbs from Trump's advisors, tweeting a link to the G7 communique and hailing the "historic and important agreement we all reached".

The attack on a long-time ally and its leader drew sharp criticism.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who also attended the summit, told German public television that she found Trump's tweet disavowing the G-7 statement "sobering" and "a little depressing".

During the talks in Quebec, Trump surprised G-7 leaders by proposing an end to all tariffs and trade barriers.

Trump, who is in Singapore for negotiations with North Korea, continued to rip into United States trading partners late Sunday night Eastern Time, repeating complaints about the USA trade deficit and contributions to NATO.

"Justin acts hurt when called out!" the U.S.

Yet his top diplomat, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, downplayed the severity of the rift.

A picture really does say a thousand words.

Trump also raised eyebrows by urging the G7 to once again become a G8 by bringing Russian Federation back into the fold and for criticizing his allies, including Canada, for what he called unfair trade barriers.

Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro also lashed out on Sunday at Trudeau's statements, saying they represent "bad faith".

"I have made it clear to [President Trump] that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

Yet Buthe cautioned: "These kind of things can spiral out of control fairly quickly" as countries hammer each other with escalating retaliatory tariffs.

But that sense of solidarity extends further than Trudeau's approach this weekend, said Watt and other Canadian political insiders from across the ideological spectrum. "That will not stand".

Trump was said to have lobbied hard to have Vladimir Putin's position within the "G8 summit" restored.

Mr Trump on Saturday threw the G-7's efforts to show a united front into disarray after he became angry with Mr Trudeau, and said he might double down on import tariffs by hitting the sensitive auto industry.

"In terms of the approach that governments choose to take, Canada does not believe that ad hominem attacks are a particularly appropriate or useful way to conduct our relations with other countries".

The top White House economic adviser accused Canada's prime minister on Sunday of betraying President Donald Trump with "polarizing" statements on USA trade policy that risked making the American leader look weak on the eve of a historic summit with North Korea.

And Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Mr Trudeau, jabbed at Mr Trump on Twitter: "Big tough guy once he's back on his airplane". Can't do it in person.

Last week, Canada hit back at the Trump administration by announcing retaliatory tariffs on up to 16.6 billion Canadian dollars (12.8 billion USA dollars) worth of US steel and aluminum as well as a diverse list of other products. From promoting democracy and to fighting terrorism, "we're on the same page".

"You know, I think this is a case of 'kick the dog, ' " said Fen Hampson, a political scientist at Carleton University in Ottawa.
