‘He is a hero’: Armed civilian kills gunman at Tumwater Walmart

A shooting at the Walmart in Tumwater Washington causes several victims

A pair of carjackings and a chaotic hunt for a suspect ended with the shooting death of an armed man by a civilian in the parking lot of a Walmart superstore in Tumwater, according to police and witnesses.

At the roundabout, they learned an armed man had tried to carjack two vehicles, injuring a 16-year-old girl in the process, though not seriously. The details remained in flux, but the Seattle Times reports that it all began when police received a call around 5pm about an apparently drunken driver near the local high school. While they were on their way to the scene, the officers were rerouted to a nearby carjacking. "(The suspect) hijacks a auto apparently to get here, then hijacks another vehicle.

According to reports, the incident at the Walmart in Tumwater happened about 5 p.m.

"As we were speaking to witnesses at that scene, we get another call of shots fired here at Walmart", Wohl said. Although it is unclear what happened during their interaction, one of the civilians shot the gunman dead. The gunman then circled around to the other side of the vehicle, and that's when his father made a last-ditch effort to leave and stomped on the gas pedal.

A woman who was in the Walmart with her kids told KIRO-TV she fled the store with them and hid in the parking lot behind a vehicle.

Police there said they initially found a 16-year-old female who had been injured during a carjacking in which shots were reported fired at about 5:00 pm.

Robert Berwick, another witness, added: "I heard two bangs".

She said she heard more pops from outside.

Two shoppers inside the store were legally carrying firearms and followed the armed suspect into the parking lot after hearing gunshots, the release says. "Ducked under some cars and ran to Costco". That's when she said she saw the tall man in the gray T-shirt come out the front door of the store and start trying to get into a series of parked cars. She heard, "pop, pop, pop", but thought something heavy had fallen onto the floor.

"We never want to see citizens put themselves in harm's way", she said of the citizen who shot the suspect, but, "in this case we don't know if he stopped the suspect from killing or hurting other people, and that can only be a good thing".

Some of them directed vehicles away from the parking lot of the store, which was ringed with yellow tape.
