The new app is now only available in Mexico, but it is described as "a simple way to capture and share the world's moments", so we expect it to be rolled out to more territories in the coming months.

The new slimmed-down software takes up 55 times less memory than Instagram's main app, and is created to use up far less mobile data. The waiting is over, and the photo-centric social media is on Google Play with a smaller package size and less clutter. The app, after all, is carefully chose to pull in even more users to add to its billion-strong roster, especially users in markets with slower Internet speeds and smaller smartphone storage space.

Instagram launched a much more streamlined version of its app on the Google Play Store on Wednesday, June 27.

Instagram said it was testing Instagram Lite in Mexico this week, and the app not only takes up less space, but uses less data and starts faster.

Facebook has been building a suite of lite apps for users and developing countries and those with poorly specced phones.

Users can post photos, add filters, view stories and use the Explore tab. Its small size means users with patchy internet coverage will still have access to their feed.

Last month, Instagram launched a revamped mobile website too which was aimed at expanding its user base in such countries.

The site now offers numerous app's main features, including photo sharing and a simplified version of the Explore tab. Unlike the IGTV app with its vertical video, the Instagram Lite app makes sense. But, for Instagram, these aren't reasons to stop people from enjoying the photo-sharing service in emerging markets.
