Jaguar Land Rover to move Discovery production to Slovakia

Land Rover Discovery moving to Slovakia from Solihull

The company, owned by India's Tata Motors, builds almost one in three of Britain's 1.7 millions cars but is producing its first electric vehicle, the I-Pace, in Austria.

"The decision to move the Land Rover Discovery to Slovakia and the potential losses of some agency employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally", the company said in a statement.

Jaguar Land Rover is to end production of its Discovery off-roader at its Solihull plant and move the work to its giant new factory in Slovakia.

The Solihull plant will be converted to manufacture electric and hybrid cars which the company will switch to making from 2020. However, before the 2019 Range Rover Evoque comes to the market, Land Rover has chose to discontinue the first generation three-door Range Rover Evoque globally due to low demand in sales.

The decision is due to the scale of a redevelopment needed at Solihull to cater for a completely new version of both the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport.

Fundamentally, the technology upgrade in Solihull will account for a third of the plant.

Last month, the company - which is owned by India's Tata Motors, said fourth-quarter pre-tax profit halved to £364million on revenues of £7.6billion.

The group saw pre-tax profit slump to £364million in the three months to March 31, down from £676million in the same period a year ago.

The only place the Discovery is built is Solihull, though the plant also has lines turning out the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Velar models, as well as the Jaguar F-Pace. It already employs 1,400 people there as it gears up to open.

The company has also blamed Brexit for hitting demand in Europe's second-largest autos market, where demand fell 6 percent previous year, a source told Reuters in April. While some agency-employed plant workers may lose their jobs, the decision to build electric cars at Solihull marks a major commitment to United Kingdom manufacturing amid uncertainty over Brexit. Sales for the Jaguar E-PACE also continue to ramp up and we look forward to retails of this exciting sporty compact SUV beginning in China in August.
