John Bolton: Leaving the Human Rights Council was 'decades in the making'

Bolton on leaving Human Rights Council US doesn’t need ‘higher judge’ of our performance

It added that the Trump administration's current policy of separating migrant children from their parents shows the U.S.is hypocritical and said the US "cannot and should not" criticize the human rights records of other nations, Reuters reported.

"But today we need to be honest", Pompeo said. The U.S. delegation's seat was empty and the nameplate removed at the end of the day.

The United Nations' Human Rights Council returned to business as usual Wednesday despite the US pulling out a day earlier.

At the rights council, the United States has recently been the most unabashed critic of rights abuses in China - whose growing economic and diplomatic clout has chastened some other would-be critics, rights advocates say.

Foreign Minister Timo Soini said in an interview with Yle that the USA had been a good partner in the council for the advancement of freedom of speech and the strengthening of the worldwide community.

Washington's retreat - officially notified to the world body on Wednesday - is the latest US rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

"The Human Rights Council has become an exercise in shameless hypocrisy - with numerous world's worst human rights abuses going ignored, and some of the world's most serious offenders sitting on the council itself", Pompeo said.

The move is indeed a political protest, one made to further secure the loyalty of Israel, a chronic human rights violator by most accounts. "The UN Human Rights Council has always been a problem".

Trump assails Canadian tariffs, accuses people of smuggling USA goods home
Negotiations to modernize NAFTA started last August and were initially scheduled to finish by the end of December 2017. But then the president railed against the North American Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico .

"Human rights are an essential element of American global foreign policy", Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement at the time of the announcement. She had been threatening the pull-out since a year ago unless the council made changes advocated by the U.S.

"Clearly, it's the right decision to get off", Mr. Bolton said during an interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends". "It is bad news, I think for the United States, it is bad news for everybody who cares about human rights", Slovenian President Borut Pahor told the 47-member forum in Geneva where the USA seat was empty.

And the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank close to the Trump administration, defended the move, calling the council "notably incurious about the human rights situations in some of the world's most oppressive countries".

But Israel and the United States have long held that the UNHRC has been held hostage to geopolitical interests.

Israel is the only country recorded as a dedicated agenda item.

I guess it comes down to degree but what's the point of having a three year rotation of countries on the council, regardless of the transgressions they're meant to be there to protect?

They've failed to condemn the likes of Chechnya or even Zimbabwe, not current council members, so what's the point of this body which employs truckloads of functionaries in the ultra expensive capital of wealth, Geneva. The U.S., as at other United Nations organizations, is Israel's biggest defender.

The United States has opted to stay out of the Human Rights Council before: The George W. Bush administration opted against seeking membership when the council was created in 2006.
