Kim Jong-un planning third China visit for summit debrief

At Singapore summit, Kim Un Jong reaffirmed his commitment to the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula in a joint statement with Trump.

His announcement appeared to catch United States defence officials by surprise, and his comments ran counter to long-held American arguments that the exercises are critical for effective operations with allies and are defensive in nature.

Kim's meetings with Xi have deepened "the special comradely friendship and trust" between North Korea and China, and promoted "the strategic choice made by the two parties and the two countries, as required by the new era, KCNA reported". No other details were provided.

A Kim trip to China to discuss his summit with Trump had been widely anticipated in diplomatic circles.

The meeting would have been unthinkable past year when tensions escalated between the two countries after North Korea came into action to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of targetting the United States.

The pair also signed an agreement in which, according to global media, North Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to the denuclearization of Korean Peninsula.

"Our government hopes China will play a constructive role in resolving this problem", spokesman Noh Kyu-deok told a regular briefing.

Kim denounced the USA president as the "mentally deranged U.S. dotard" who would be "tamed ... with fire".

Kim's trip follows his groundbreaking summit with President Donald Trump in Singapore last week that resulted in a surprise announcement of a US suspension of military drills with its South Korean ally.

A USA official said on Monday the United States and South Korea had agreed to suspend a joint military exercise scheduled to take place in August code-named "Ulchi Freedom Guardian", in line with Trump's comments.

In March, South Korea's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, visiting the White House after meeting with Kim in Pyongyang, said Kim understood such drills must go on.

The next major exercise with South Korea is known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian; last year's version was held for 11 days in August and involved about 17,500 U.S. troops.

Trump had not informed the South Korean government or the U.S. military of his decision, which contradicted both countries' belief that the drills are purely defensive in nature and essential preparation for a possible North Korean attack.

There was also confusion over Mr Trump calling the drills "provocative", a term hitherto used by North Korea to describe them.

He added that dumping the drills will save the U.S. "To the contrary, they tend to be judged as military free-riders or economic rivals or both".

The next exercise was scheduled for August with some 17,500 U.S. military personnel due to take part.

The secretary of state said he was "confident" the U.S. would reach some sort of agreement with Canada and Mexico as part of NAFTA talks.
