Melania Trump 'hates' to see families separated at USA border

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on April 6 that the Department of Homeland Security would refer all cases of illegal entry into the United States for criminal prosecution as part of the administration's efforts to deter illegal immigration.

"The policy now being enacted where children are being separated from their parents even when they're applying for asylum, we want that to stop", said Acosta.

Several Democrats, including some who are seen as 2020 presidential candidates, travelled to McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley area in Texas on Sunday to meet with United States border authorities and tour a former Walmart Inc. store that's been converted into a detention centre for almost 1,500 immigrant boys.

The president has accused Democrats of promulgating "laws" that have caused family separation at the border - though there are no laws mandating that children be taken away from any adult arriving at the border.

"No nation can have the policy that whole classes of people are immune from immigration law or enforcement", Miller told the Times.

Acting HHS Assistant Secretary Steven Wagner outlined the policy in a recent Senate hearing, saying, "we're going to give potential sponsor information to DHS so that they can provide their input based on all of the information that they have available", which he said will "improve the quality of our decision-making about the appropriateness of the sponsors". "If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border", Sessions said.

Though the policy has been enacted and touted by his own Administration, Trump has avoided publicly owning it and, instead, blamed Democrats for "forcing the breakup of families at the Border with their frightful and cruel legislative agenda".

The additional child detentions - reportedly including babies and toddlers - have resulted in some shelters and foster homes reporting that they are running out of space.

Merkel, allies heading for showdown over immigration policy
As a compromise, the CDU proposes turning away at the border migrants who have already applied for asylum and been rejected. The conservatives' centre-left coalition ally, the Social Democrat (SPD) party, said their dispute needed to be settled.

Seven House Democrats made a surprise visit to a detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on Sunday, on the US Father's Day, and said they were blocked for almost two hours before finally being allowed to see the parents who had been separated from their children.

Earlier in the day, counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway attempted to distance the Trump administration from the rise of migrant children separated from their parents at the Mexican border.

Collins took several days to study the issue before announcing her position Sunday morning on the separation policy that has been widely criticized in the past weeks by church groups, politicians and children's advocates.

When parents are taken into federal custody, their children are removed.

Brane says that may also discourage children from giving all the information that they are aware of to the social workers and the employees who are trying to reunify them.

House Republican leaders are offering two immigration measures - a hard-line draft and written legislation billed as a compromise between the moderate and conservative factions of the party. "That is traumatising to the children, who are innocent victims".

Mr Trump has claimed he hates the idea of separating children from the parents who try to enter the country, and has repeatedly blamed Democrats for the law, but the administration has acknowledged that crackdown on the families could serve as a deterrent.

Steve Bannon, Trump's former chief strategist, said the administration's "zero tolerance" policy on immigration doesn't have to be justified.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials say four people were pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday, while a fifth person died in hospital. He placed partial blame for the separation issue on Sessions. Children under age 10 are of deep concern, she said.
