Merkel seeks European Union migrant talks as German coalition crisis looms -paper

German Chancellor Angela Merkel attends a news conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg after a meeting at the chancellery in Berlin Friday

Seehofer, who heads one of three parties in Merkel's coalition, defied her with plans to order migrants turned away as soon as yesterday.

Germany's Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said on Sunday a row between his Bavarians and Chancellor Angela Merkel is serious but can be overcome, a signal that he may compromise to avoid a full-blown German coalition crisis.

"Member States should take all necessary internal legislative and administrative measures to counter such movements and to closely cooperate amongst each other to this end", the text said in an indirect response to German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.

The CDU and CSU have recently reached a political deadlock over the question of whether or not to turn back asylum seekers at the German border who were already registered in another Schengen area country.

German leader Angela Merkel is facing pushback from her political allies on her open door policy for refugees.

The CSU's top priority is a hard October state election in Bavaria in which it is trying to tamp down support for the anti-migration Alternative for Germany party.

Merkel is adamant that a European solution is needed and is seeking bilateral deals with some partners, such as Italy and Greece, similar to one agreed between Turkey and the EU in 2016.

Macron a year ago outlined his vision for a stronger, more united Europe as a forceful reply to what was known as the National Front, a far-right party he defeated at the polls.

The AfD, which is expected to poach votes from the CSU in October, accused Seehofer of electioneering.

More than 1.6 million migrants, mostly Muslims fleeing wars in the Middle East, have arrived in Germany since 2014.

Seehofer's CSU party is due to meet Monday to decide which course to take. She noted that formulating a joint European Union asylum policy was hard.

Macron also said Paris and Berlin wanted agreements that would allow European Union member states to reject at their borders asylum seekers already registered elsewhere in the bloc - usually the first port of entry.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump said that the people of Germany were turning against their leadership because of loose migration policies.

Seehofer's ultimatum has become one of the biggest challenges to Merkel's authority since she took power almost 13 years ago. Two other leading CSU members said they wanted to start implementing the policy quickly.

Merkel accepted the deadline and said she will attempt to solidify a deal by the European Union summit later this month, and report to her party by July 1.

On Monday, reports emerged that Seehofer has agreed to give Merkel two weeks to come up with a solution, but the situation is still highly concerning for investors already anxious about politics in the European region.

Merkel has agreed on a common investment budget for the bloc, but says it should be worth several tens of billions of euros, not the hundreds of billions suggested by Macron.
