Mom Posts Serious Warning About Going Down the Slide with Your Kids

Mom Reminds Us It's Super Dangerous To Go Down Slides With Kids

If you don't think your kid is old enough to do it on their own, then don't let them do it at all even if you try and help. If they are too young to go down alone, they shouldn't go down yet.

Heather Clare posted the picture on Facebook saying it was her annual public service announcement.

The photo shows the child riding down a slide in her mother's lap.

Here's one with a touch of personal experience, and after reading it (and looking closely at the picture), you'll never jump on a slide with a child on your lap again. On that occasion, 18-month-old Hannah Dickman's sneaker became stuck on the side of the slide as she went down on her mother's lap, causing it to get caught underneath mum, Katie's leg, resulting in a fractured tibia. Through her post she comments, "This picture is the moment her leg was breaking".

Although the tot, now four years old, recovered and doesn't have any lasting effects from her accident, Clare wants to ensure this kind of thing doesn't happen to other kids and also wants to get the word out that it is, in fact, a very common injury.

It was there that Clare learned just how prevalent slide injuries are. "I had no idea", Clare explained.

"I took Meadow down the slide on my lap, and about halfway down the slide, I realized her foot was caught between me and the slide", Clare, 35, tells PEOPLE.

"I strongly feel every playground should have a warning sign, but since I've never seen one (and we go to a lot of playgrounds), I share this picture every year in hopes that the pain Meadow felt and the guilt that I still feel will save other babies and parents from the same", she says.

According to a study presented at the Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition in Chicago in 2017, researchers found that out of the 350,000 children younger than 6 years of age who were injured on slides in the USA from 2002 to 2015, toddlers ages 12 to 23 months had especially high rates of injury.

After her injury, Meadow spent about a month in a cast.

Hoekstra says playground injuries send 27,000 children across the country to the emergency room every year. Just like Meadow's had.

In a study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics, researchers found that almost 352,700 children under the age of six were injured on slides in the US between the years 2002 to 2015. This year the post has been shared more than 67,000 times and attracted over 12,000 reactions on Facebook.

Meadow is now 3 and has made a full recovery since that frightening day at Heckscher Park in Huntington, New York, in 2015. I did blame myself.

"And in most cases I have seen, the parents had no idea that doing so could possibly give their child such a significant injury".

She is not only pleading with parents, but local councils around the world, to provide warnings about the dangers of sliding with young children. More often than not, they thank her for the advice.

Meadow will be 4 in September.
