Navarro Voices Regret for Harsh Words About Canadian Leader

Trump: Trudeau criticism will cost Canada `a lot of money´

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro apologised for suggesting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau deserved a "special place in hell" for a perceived breach in protocol against US President Donald Trump.

"In conveying that message, I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", CNN quoted Navarro as saying on Tuesday at the Wall Street Journal's annual CFO Network conference.

"I find it hard to try to apologize for words that come from the mouths of people in our government, so I don't even try", she said.

Though Trudeau had made these comments many times before, Trump and his advisers quickly responded. Trudeau had criticized Trump for the new tariffs and vowed that Canadians "will not be pushed around".

But Trump himself couldn't seem to let go of his annoyance with Trudeau, even as he celebrated signing a historic de-nuclearization agreement with North Korea. While the apology could help ease tensions, analysts said Navarro's outburst had made it harder for the parties to reach an agreement on updating the North American Free Trade Agreement among the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

A spokeswoman for Mr Trudeau, Eleanore Catenaro, declined to comment on Mr Navarro's acknowledgement of a mistake.

He asserted, with no evidence, that Trudeau only dared to say Canada wouldn't be pushed around because he didn't think Trump, who was on board Air Force 1 en route to Singapore, would see him. And I say, 'Push him around?

"We finished the (G7) meeting and really everybody was happy". He learned. That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada.

In Vermont, where Trump is particularly unpopular, a few choice words from the president won't keep people away from a popular weekend getaway on either side of the border, says one keen observer. "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that.

In the same set of tweets, Trump said: "Justin acts hurt when called out!"

Showing support for industry amid the turmoil, Trudeau met Tuesday with a group of farmers in Ottawa who benefit from the supply management system that has drawn the ire of Trump. Trump's steel tariffs and threats to tax auto imports, among other protectionist policies, have strained relations with America's closest allies, including Canada, with whom the administration has been struggling to re-negotiate NAFTA.

After Trudeau's news conference, Trump pulled the US out of the G-7's official statement of common values and accused the prime minister, who hosted the G-7 conference, of making "false statements" while also blasting him as "very dishonest and weak".

A recent report by the Peterson Institute for International Economics found that blanket 25-per-cent tariffs on automobile imports to the US, including auto parts, would reduce production by 1.5 per cent and could cause job losses of 195,000 in the USA over the first three years, and would affect $200 billion in US imports.

"From the beginning we have said that our approach would be to work for the best possible outcome but to always be prepared for the worst, to have backup plans", she said.

"I think we've simply got to continue and expand that effort that's been developed", Former Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday.
