NCAA tweaks redshirt rules, allows players to preserve eligibility

The second, football players can participate in as many as four games without it counting toward the four seasons allowed in five years, effective immediately for the 2018-19 season.

The first, beginning October 15 student-athletes will be able to transfer and receive a scholarship without asking their current school for permission across all sports.

The NCAA's Transfer Working Group proposed the change in fall 2017 in an attempt to separate a student-athlete's interest in transferring to a new school from the process of receiving a scholarship at the new school.

The previous system required student-athletes wishing to transfer to get permission from their current school before contacting another school, and receiving a post-transfer scholarship offer.

Beyond this change, the Transfer Working Group is considering other transfer issues, including the processes surrounding postgraduate transfers. At that point, coaches from other schools are free to contact the student. "Coaches will appreciate the additional flexibility and ability to give younger players an opportunity to participate in limited competition".

In a news release posted Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA confirmed a slate of hugely significant rules changes to how players transfers and the highly debated "redshirt rule" that would allow players an easier path to maintaining an extra season of eligibility.

The outgoing rule that required athletes to get permission before transferring was meant to prevent schools from recruiting athletes from other schools.

American Red Cross hopes new campaign brings in more blood donors
The Missing Type campaign is taking place during National Blood Donor Week, which this year is commemorating its 10th anniversary. In her message to commemorate World Blood Donor Day which falls on 14 June 2018, under the theme: Be there for someone else.

As of now, this rule does not apply to sports other than college football, but the Division I Student-Athlete Experience Committee is examining "how a similar concept could be applied to other sports, including what number of games would be appropriate", according to the NCAA's release.

A new policy adopted this week by the NCAA will allow student-athletes playing football at the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision levels to play in four games in a season without using a season of competition.

"This change promotes not only fairness for college athletes, but also their health and well-being", Blake said. Within two days, the school must enter the athlete's name into a national transfer database.

As the attitudes toward the rights of student-athletes continue to loosen, these rules followed suit.

"This creates a safe place for student-athletes to have a conversation with their coaches and makes the whole process more transparent", former Coastal Carolina football player Nicholas Clark said in the NCAA statement.

Previously, only players who did not play a snap in a season or were sidelined by injury before playing in more than four games were generally granted redshirts by the NCAA.
