Net Neutrality Rules Have Officially Been Repealed by the FCC

ImageSenator Charles Schumer the minority leader has opposed the repeal of net neutrality

The Obama Era laws protecting net neutrality are finally gone.

Back in February, FCC's new chairman Ajit Pai, who is a former Verizon lawyer, issued a "Restoring Internet Freedom" order in the Federal Registry.

While the move was supported by the telecom industry, it has faced fierce resistance from others. Washington is the only state that has net neutrality rules in place, and other states are expected to follow suit and set up laws over the coming months through executive orders.

The US has officially repealed rules that governed the way net providers treated the data that travelled across their networks. But what is net neutrality, and what does its repeal mean for you? Now Comcast Cable president Dave Watson posted a blog post today to reconfirm Comcast's "committed to an open internet".

Net Neutrality made it illegal for internet providers to slow down and censor content.

A local business owner is aggravated over the repeal of net neutrality, which means internet providers now have the ability to slow down particular websites, or speed up connections for customers willing to pay more.

"I don't think anything gets better for consumers", said FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, one of two Democrats on the five-person commission. Its chairman has long argued against the rules, pointing out that before they were put into effect in 2015, service providers had not engaged in any of the practices the rules prohibited. Any change to how it's regulated is a hot button issue. Consumer advocates are concerned that internet providers plan to extend prioritization to the internet. The FCC also eliminated a rule barring providers from prioritizing their own content.

Furthermore, the ISPs could also throttle or even block competing services. It will then be evaluated based on whether or not the activity is anti-competitive. Pai says this system lets the FTC focus on "the bad apples" and allows other players "thrive in a free market".

But supporters of net neutrality-such as big tech companies like Google and Facebook, as well as consumer groups and pioneers of the internet like World Wide Web creator Tim Berners-Lee-say the internet as we know it may not exist without these protections.

The repeal could also change how customers are billed for services, both for good and bad.

Today marks the official first day of a Net Neutrality-free America. Initially, this might be viewed as a positive by consumers looking to save money on their streaming media.

An edge provider, for those wondering, is an individual or entity that provides content, applications or services over the internet, or devices for accessing any of those things over the internet, available to end-users, i.e., the consumers. And three other states, California, New York and IL, plan to pass their own versions soon.

On May 16, the U.S. Senate, where Republicans hold only a narrow majority, voted 52 to 47 to overturn the decision by the FCC - which is now composed of three Republicans and Rosenworcel.

Twenty-nine states have since introduced legislation, proposing reinstating some aspects of Net Neutrality.
