Netflix show director's Tesla auto catches fire 'out of the blue'

Tesla Model S catches fire'out of the blue

Her husband, Michael Morris, has worked as a producer for the ABC show "Brothers and Sisters", and directed episodes of "Smash", "House of Cards" and "Kingdom".

There are no known issues with Teslas catching fire on their own, not related to an accident.

The footage, dated June 15, shows a auto engulfed in flames while parked at the side of the road in California.

The video was posted on Twitter by actress Mary McCormack, who said it showed her husband's vehicle engulfed in fire. He was not injured in the fire. "And thank god my three little girls weren't in the vehicle with him", wrote McCormack, who has had leading roles in series including Murder One and The West Wing.

In May, the NTSB began investigating a crash involving a Model S that killed two teenagers in Florida after it crashed into a wall and burst into flames.

A spokeswoman for Tesla said in an email that the battery fire on Friday was "an extraordinarily unusual occurrence, and we are investigating the incident to find out what happened".

"While our customer had time to safely exit the vehicle, we are working to understand the cause of the fire", she added. Since then, Tesla has reinforced the cars' undercarriage to better protect the battery packs and adjusted the car's air suspension.

Tesla acknowledged that rare fires occur but stated their cars are safer than a gas engine and safety is a top priority in their designs. Lt. Dan Nagelmann, from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, confirmed it was either a battery or mechanical issue that caused the fire and there was no collision at all.
