Pharmacist denies woman abortion pill despite already dead fetus

Nicole Mone said her doctor gave her an option to undergo a surgical procedure or take medication to end the pregnancy

An Arizona woman is going public after she says a Walgreens pharmacist denied her a medication to end a pregnancy.

Nicole Arteaga says her doctor prescribed the medication after determining she would have a miscarriage, but the pharmacist told her he couldn't do it for ethical reasons. Borchelt said her group has heard of women being denied prescriptions in at least 26 states since 2000.

After receiving word that her unborn baby no longer had a heartbeat, it was hard to imagine how things could get worse for Nicole Arteaga, until they did.

Arteago said she left Walgreens without her prescription.

"I stood at the mercy of this pharmacist explaining my situation in front of my 7-year-old, and five customers standing behind only to be denied because of his ethical beliefs", Ms Arteaga claimed in her post. Arteaga said her prescription was transferred to another Walgreens location, where she was able to pick it up without a problem.

Arteaga also said she had contacted Walgreens' corporate office.

But such policies can leave a patient feeling "publicly shamed" said Kelli Garcia, director of reproductive justice initiatives for the National Women's Law Center.

Pharmacists are allowed under company policy to walk away from filling a prescription if they have a moral objection, Walgreens said in a statement on Saturday, according to the news outlet.

Walgreens sent this statement to KPNX: "After learning what happened, we reached out to the patient and apologized for how the situation was handled".

"I get it we all have our beliefs", she wrote.

He said that part of the law hasn't been interpreted by the board before. Her Facebook post about the incident is heartbreaking, and has quickly drummed up a whole lot of internet outrage. She said the law steps into the relationship between a woman and her provider - a woman could become ill by not properly dealing with a miscarriage, she said.

Employees are required, however, to have another pharmacist or manager handle the prescription so that the patient's needs are met "in a timely manner".

Walgreens said the pharmacist's actions weren't exactly wrong, according to WTSP 10 News.

"I don't have control over my body and I don't have control of the situation", Arteaga said.

"This post isn't something I generally do, but last night I experienced something no women should ever have to go thru especially under these circumstances or any other circumstances. This is something I have zero control over", wrote Arteaga in a Facebook post. "And, looking back at those comments, it's nice to know that people understand the situation and what I'm going through", Arteaga said. "My (doctor) gave me two choices D & C or a prescription that will help induce bleeding and discharge in the comfort of my home", she wrote.

Despite all the trouble, Arteaga said she was thankful for all the support she has received after sharing her story on social media.

Kelli Garcia, director of reproductive justice initiatives and senior counsel at the National Women's Law Center, told BuzzFeed News that Arizona is one of six USA states where pharmacists can refuse to serve customers on religious or ethical grounds.

It allows employees of pharmacies or hospitals, or health professionals who object to abortions, emergency contraception or devices to end a pregnancy, not to provide services or products that allow abortions to occur.
