Rafael Nadal overcomes cramp to add to French Open trophy collection

Report Roger Federer to drop Nike for US$30m Uniqlo deal

Rafael Nadal celebrates after his win over Dominic Thiem during their men's singles final match on Day 15 of the 2018 French Open tennis tournament in Paris on June 10, 2018.

Nadal clinched an 11th French Open with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Dominic Thiem on Sunday to take his majors total to 17.

It was hard not to feel sympathy for Thiem, playing in his first grand slam final against a man who simply does not lose this particular battle.

Simona Halep of Romania broke through in Paris for her first Grand Slam title.

With four titles out of five won on clay this season after his return from injury in April, the attention now shifts to the grass-court season which will mean a return to action for Roger Federer who will not only be looking to win another Wimbledon title but also regain his No. 1 ranking from Nadal. But after, the Spaniard was imperious.

Nadal endured a nervy conclusion to the final, however, when he needed treatment in the fourth game of the third set for a finger injury before sealing victory on a fifth match point when Thiem fired a backhand long.

After Roland Garros, Nadal's win-loss record on clay stands at 415-36.

Just as happy fishing or playing golf in Mallorca, Nadal is ruthless on the tennis court but disarmingly humble off it.

"I played my best match of the tournament", Nadal told the crowd afterward.

Katherine Lam is a breaking and trending news digital producer for Fox News.

"What is in my mind now is I won a very important title for me".

Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Garbine Muguruza remained the WTA's top three, but French Open runner-up Sloane Stephens went from No 10 to a career-high No 4.

"It's incredible now, I can't describe my feelings", Nadal told the crowd on Philippe Chatrier Court moments after capturing his 17th Grand Slam trophy with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 victory. I am enjoying that moment.

The 32-year-old world number one now has 17 Grand Slam titles, just three behind great rival Roger Federer.

He now has 86 match wins on Paris' famous crushed red brick against just two defeats in 13 years. That led to 34 winners (eight more than Nadal), but also 42 unforced errors (18 more than Nadal).

In a rare show of emotion, Nadal looked close to tears as he collected the Coupe des Mousquetaires again after beating Austrian Thiem. "And there's been a few young ladies that have come through and had some victories", said Halep's coach, Darren Cahill.

Midway through the opening set, Nadal's aqua T-shirt was so soaked with sweat it stuck to him, so he changed into a fresh one at a changeover, drawing catcalls from spectators.

Perhaps. But under so much pressure from Nadal all afternoon, Thiem made mistakes that piled up. In the other semi-final, Marco Cecchinato's unusual run in the last two weeks was ended by Dominic Thiem, also in straight sets, although the first two sets were somewhat closer than anything Del Potro could muster.
