Rudy Giuliani Renews Calls for Justice Department to Investigate Russia Probe

Giuliani demands Mueller suspend Russia probe

Rudy Giuliani speaks at the Iran Freedom Convention for Human Rights and democracy in Washington, May 5, 2018.

He said he would advise Trump against such actions during the probe "Because you just cloud what is becoming now a very clear picture of an extremely unfair investigation with no criminality involved of any kind".

Giuliani says Trump retains his right to pardon and could do so after special counsel Robert Mueller's report is complete, if people were treated "unfairly".

The question of Trump pardoning former associates came up again after a federal judge last Friday ordered Manafort jailed for tampering with a witness while out on bail.

The president was responding to questions about the 568-page report released Thursday by the Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general (IG) concerning the 2016 FBI investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and address to conduct official US diplomatic business.

But he was removed from the post in July 2017 after thousands of emails and text messages became public, including one in which he promised "we'll stop him" if Trump won.

Both of the agents held top positions in both the FBI's Clinton and Trump investigations. Strzok was a lead investigator during the inquiry into Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's past use of a private email server, and he worked with Mueller's team investigating any potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Trump has criticised that decision as "very unfair" as Manafort prepares for two criminal trials.

Giuliani added that Trump's legal team would try to limit any interview with Mueller "to some specific questions about the heart of the probe" that they think "could be answered quickly" - in about three hours, he said.

Giuliani said, seemingly referring to the inspector general's report released Thursday.

Citing findings in last week's Justice Department inspector general's report related to the conduct of two senior FBI agents, the former mayor called for a review of the origins of the Russian Federation investigation.

"In a situation like this, there are going to be a lot of differing recollections and a lot of corrections are going to be necessary", Giuliani said.

When asked if and when Mr. Trump would sit down with Mueller's team of investigators for an interview, Giuliani said he advised against it, but said his client is intent on providing his version of events. The report notes that Strzok told investigators the missive was meant to reassure Page generally and that it was not indicative of any planned behavior to influence the probe.

"I'm not really saying the special counsel".

But the president has issued several pardons in recent weeks, which some have interpreted as a signal to affiliates being targeted by Mueller's probe not to cooperate with the investigation.

Giuliani's comments were the latest in a barrage of attacks on the probe by the president and his lawyers as Mueller appears to be nearing a conclusion to his investigation into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Moscow.
