Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Popular Breakfast Cereal — CDC

Federal health officials want you to toss out all boxes of Kellogg's Honey Smacks after a salmonella outbreak sickened 73 people across 31 states.

Kellogg Co. announced Friday it is voluntarily recalling 15.3-ounce and 23-ounce packages of Honey Smacks, a sweetened puffed wheat cereal that comes in a bright red, orange and yellow box.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging anyone in possession of the recalled cereal to discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

24 people have been hospitalized. The "best if used by" date is on the box top.

The FDA's outbreak update explained that the Kellogg recall did not cover all of the potentially contaminated cereal.

Germany 0 Mexico 1: Lozano stuns woeful reigning champion
Mexico supporters outnumbered Germany fans at the Luzhniki Stadium and made nearly all of the noise, roaring their team forward. It was just the second goal Mexico had scored in its last five games, equaling its worst offensive drought in four years.

Outbreaks of salmonella have been preliminarily tied to Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal and pre-cut melons and a fruit medley.

The FDA is also warning a number of foreign countries where the cereal was distributed: Aruba/Curaçao/Saint Maarten (Netherlands Antilles), the Bahamas, Barbados, Tortola (British Virgin Islands), Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, and Tahiti (French Polynesia).

The Food and Drug Administration and the CDC contacted Kellogg after receiving reports of salmonella-related illnesses in several states, the CDC said Thursday.

NY has reported seven cases, while California, Pennsylvania and MA have had five cases each. Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal cramps, and appear within 12 and 72 hours of consumption of salmonella bacteria. In rare cases, salmonella can get into the bloodstream and cause severe illness and sometimes deadly infections in young children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Walmart said it has removed affected products from its shelves.

Recovery takes anywhere from four to seven days.
