Sen. Cardin: U.S. can't make concessions without North Korea action

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind", Kim said as he and Trump signed the joint statement, adding, "The world will see a major change".

When Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the global media center for the summit at F1 Pit Building on Sunday, he said it will cost the city state "around 20 million Singaporean dollars" (W16.1 billion, US$1=W1,078) to host the "historic summit".

In a joint declaration following their meeting in Singapore on Tuesday, the North Korean leader pledged to move toward complete denuclearization and Trump vowed to guarantee the security of the United States' old foe.

Here is a look at where the main players stand, and what may lie ahead.

He added, "Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea". Beijing lost little time in declaring that Singapore forged a "new history".

North Korea typically heavily censors its local and foreign content, with events often not being reported until several days after, if at all.

Xi met twice with Kim before Singapore and retains a strong influence on the situation - China even lent Kim a plane to get to the summit. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea.

The Red Sea port is a lifeline for millions of people, handling most of the country's commercial imports and humanitarian aid supplies.

During his return, Trump spoke with South Korean Prime Minister Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Trump at a news conference Tuesday after the summit suddenly announced that he would end "provocative" and "expensive" joint military operations between the USA and South Korea, declaring "I think it's inappropriate to have war games" while negotiations were underway.

The welcome from Japan was conspicuously less effusive than from other countries, with Tokyo under direct threat from North Korean missiles and reliant on the U.S. for its defence.

But the future remains uncertain - the USA and North Korea did not reach any agreement on the details of how to achieve or verify that denuclearization.

This distinction is important because it would give North Korea a loophole to argue that it does not need to allow inspectors into its facilities.

According to the North's official KCNA news agency, the two leaders accepted invitations to visit each other's countries, so more "historic" summits could also be in the offing.
