Senate passes pot bill, marijuana to be legal by mid-September

CANADA: House Of Commons Votes 205-62 To Legalize Recreational Pot, Bill Now Goes To Senate [VIDEO]

A federal bill to legalize recreational cannabis was bounced back to the Senate on Monday, where the government's representative argued it's time to get on with lifting Canada's nearly century-old prohibition on marijuana.

It's now up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet to choose the date the law will take effect.

It also allows adults to sell cannabis as well as grow up to four plants in their home, making Canada the second country in the world after Uruguay to legalize recreational marijuana use.

Canada has become the first G7 nation to legalize recreational marijuana. "Our plan to legalize & regulate marijuana just passed the Senate", Trudeau said in a tweet. The bill has been the subject of more than a year of fractious debate and games of legislative ping-pong between the Senate and lawmakers in Canada's lower house of Parliament. Today, we change that.

According to reports, the bill will allow anyone over the age of 18 to possess no more than 30 grams of marijuana. "A fearless move on the part of the government", he said, according to CBC.

It is possible the final vote to pass Bill C-45 will occur this evening.

In the days leading up to passage, the House of Commons rejected 13 of the Senate's 46 proposed amendments, including one that would have allowed provinces to ban homegrown marijuana, and another that would bar cannabis companies from selling branded merchandise.

He said it was time for the government to "embrace a decisive change", adding: "Can British Conservatives be as bold as Canadian Liberals?"

Canadians across the country will be able to order marijuana online from federally licensed producers.

Even after Tuesday's vote, the government is left with a long to-do list. Questions remain, too, over whether to grant amnesty for past marijuana convictions and over how strictly police forces should crack down on growing cannabis at home.

A Canadian flag with a marijuana leaf on it is seen during the annual 4/20 marijuana rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, April 20, 2017. Legalisation could create a market worth C$7.2 billion ($7.8 billion) and investor anticipation has already created several companies such as Aurora Cannabis with market values of more than C$1 billion.

An expert panel is being set up to advise ministers of potential changes to the law in the United Kingdom, which is the world's largest exporter of legal cannabis.

But Ralph Goodale, Canada's public safety minister, told the Senate that his message to Americans is that "this should not be an issue".
